Church Affiliation
|
The Square is not operationally affiliated with any religious organization but does try to accommodate residents’ choices in this regard. There is a Baptist, a Catholic and a Methodist church within one block of our home.

24-hour Nursing
|
The Square provides 24-hour licensed professional nursing staff on premises to perform the on-going healthcare monitoring necessary and address the medical conditions of the residents.

Quality-of-care Reviews |
A review of patient care issues and/or needs occurs almost daily and is attended by the Directors of Residents’ Services, Director of Nursing, our Administrator and others. |
Emergency Care |
Emergency services including paramedics and the fire & police departments are located one block from the facility. The Square also works very closely with both hospitals and their respective ER’s. |
Community-practice Physicians (M.D., Neurologist, Psychologist) |
Residents can choose to use their own physicians or the dedicated physicians who continue their long-standing relationships with The Square and its residents. We do have an on-site clinic as well. |
Mobility Assistance |
Lifts, specialized bathing tubs, wheelchairs, etc. are available for resident comfort and safety. |
Community-centered Location |
Close access to libraries, theaters, museums, churches, parks, shopping, restaurants and more – all within walking distance! Additionally, we are immediately adjacent to Knox College. |
High-activity Environment |
Residents can choose from or suggest a variety of leisure and recreational activities coordinated by enthusiastic Activities Professionals. Visit our website (www.SMSliving.org) for a 12-month history of activities. |
Respectful culture |
Residents are encouraged to exercise their individual rights, make personal choices, offer suggestions and develop their independence. |
One- or Two-person Rooms |
The Square provides private and semi-private rooms and allows for reasonable personalization and individualization by residents. |
Customized Dining Services |
Each individual’s specialized nutritional needs are reviewed and each resident is encouraged to eat at their developmental level utilizing their dining skills in either the staff-assisted cafeteria-style or family-style dining areas. |

It is the Square’s goal to hire only people who care about those they serve. Team members are screened throughout their tenure.
Note: Nearly a third of our staff have provided services at The Square for more than 10 years and half for more than 5 years.

Our nurses, resident service directors and direct-care staff seek continual improvement regarding best-practices in medical & general-care standards by receiving in-house training and attending training sessions offered at schools and other organizations. |

Fleet of Specially-equipped Vehicles

The Square maintains a fleet of vehicles, including many with wheelchair lifts to allow residents access to the community when needed. Whether to see a specialist, physician or go to a restaurant or community activity, The Square can provide transportation to accommodate most individuals. |
