Privately Operated,
Not-for-profit

Being private and not-for-profit allows the Square to focus more on the interests, needs and preferences of the individual residents.

Church Affiliation

The Square is not operationally affiliated with any religious organization but does try to accommodate residents’ choices in this regard.  There is a Baptist, a Catholic and a Methodist church within one block of our home.

24-hour Nursing

The Square provides 24-hour licensed professional nursing staff on premises to perform the on-going healthcare monitoring necessary and address the medical conditions of the residents.

Quality-of-care Reviews

A review of patient care issues and/or needs occurs almost daily and is attended by the Directors of Residents’ Services, Director of Nursing, our Administrator and others.

Emergency Care

Emergency services including paramedics and the fire & police departments are located one block from the facility. The Square also works very closely with both hospitals and their respective ER’s.

Community-practice Physicians (M.D., Neurologist, Psychologist)

Residents can choose to use their own physicians or the dedicated physicians who continue their long-standing relationships with The Square and its residents. We do have an on-site clinic as well.

Mobility Assistance

Lifts, specialized bathing tubs, wheelchairs, etc. are available for resident comfort and safety.

Community-centered Location

Close access to libraries, theaters, museums, churches, parks, shopping, restaurants and more – all within walking distance! Additionally, we are immediately adjacent to Knox College.

High-activity Environment

Residents can choose from or suggest a variety of leisure and recreational activities coordinated by enthusiastic Activities Professionals. Visit our website (www.SMSliving.org) for a 12-month history of activities.

Respectful culture

Residents are encouraged to exercise their individual rights, make personal choices, offer suggestions and develop their independence.

One- or Two-person Rooms

The Square provides private and semi-private rooms and allows for reasonable personalization and individualization by residents.

Customized Dining Services

Each individual’s specialized nutritional needs are reviewed and each resident is encouraged to eat at their developmental level utilizing their dining skills in either the staff-assisted cafeteria-style or family-style dining areas.

Strategic Hiring Practices

It is the Square’s goal to hire only people who care about those they serve.  Team members are screened throughout their tenure.
Note:  Nearly a third of our staff have provided services at The Square for more than 10 years and half for more than 5 years.

Highly-trained Staff

Our nurses, resident service directors and direct-care staff seek continual improvement regarding best-practices in medical & general-care standards by receiving in-house training and attending training sessions offered at schools and other organizations.

Inclusion of Day-training Provider in Admission Process

Day-training and vocational instruction are usually available upon admission… no lengthy waiting periods.

Fleet of Specially-equipped Vehicles

The Square maintains a fleet of vehicles, including many with wheelchair lifts to allow residents access to the community when needed. Whether to see a specialist, physician or go to a restaurant or community activity, The Square can provide transportation to accommodate most individuals.

Longevity and Experience as Provider

The Square has provided specialized residential/medical care for adults with developmental disabilities since 1977 and is positioned to continue to do so into the future. Here to serve, here to stay.
